My office bought this coffeemaker because it looks nice. Which it does, unfortunately unless you drink the very first cup immediately after it is brewed your coffee will be lukewarm at best. There is no automatic shut off which in a "commercial" type coffeemaker should be standard. The lid is not a "flip-up" like most, it screws on, which I guess is nice if you are walking around with a coffeepot in your hands, but who does that. The screw on lid does make it hard to pour water into the top of the maker completely because some water is always stuck under the lip, it also makes pouring coffee difficult. Overall, you'd be much better spending $20 on a much cheaper model with better features.

I used to have a part-time job at an office supply retailer while I was finishing my Bachelor's degree and they were clearancing out all of their coffee makers, so I got this coffee maker at a complete STEAL. My spouse and I have used it pretty religiously over that time, and it's even been dropped a couple of times while moving and what-not, and we have not had any real problems with it. There are a few tricks to it, though...1...If you like your coffee HOT HOT HOT, then you should look at something else. I've lived in Texas my whole life and I can't imagine anything more terrible than getting up on a summer morning (when it's already 90 degrees outside) and having a super piping cup of hot coffee. So, temperature wise, this was perfect for me and my spouse. Also, if you want it cold you can stick the carafe in the fridge and not have to worry about any glass cracking.2...The lid DOES screw on. It has never bothered me or my spouse, but my sister (who stayed with us for a little while after she was laid-off) is forbidden from making coffee by herself in my house. If you are too hasty with screwing it on, and fail to secure it properly, then the lid will push the stopper closed on the brewing basket and all of the water will stay inside the basket and then overflow onto the counter. You just have to be careful not to cross-thread it or anything. I always spin it in reverse once and when it sets down to where it's supposed to be, you can screw it closed with no problems at all. Also, I never put the lid on the carafe when I'm pouring the water into the reservoir. One reviewer said they had problems with this. I just leave the lid off until after I pour the water in.3...It is only 8 cups, where the typical coffee maker has 12. This is more than enough for 2 travel mugs or a couple of big coffee mugs on the weekend between me and my spouse, but when my parents came for a visit (coffee-drinking-monsters) we had to brew several batches just for the 4 of us.4...There is nothing fancy about this one. There are no timers or auto shut-off features. Just an on-off switch. Works just perfectly, but you have to get up that extra 10 minutes early to get the coffee started. I know that's a real problem for some people.5...Replacing the carafe is impossible. Or so it seems, at least. After all the gallons of coffee it has made for us, the bottom piece has somehow come off of the carafe. It is most likely our fault...we tend to be a little aggressive uncaffeinated. We have not been successful with homemade reattachment attempts, so I am trying to just find another carafe that will replace this one. I can't even find it through Hamilton Beach, though. I will keep looking, but it's starting to look like I might have to invest in a new coffee maker.Overall...a very good machine if you are looking for something that just works. I have had the super-fancy programmable ones in the past and they have not worked nearly as long as this one has.

I have come to trust Hamilton Beach for nearly all my kitchen appliances-- toaster, grill, food processor, etc--& this coffeemaker is no exception, especially with the commercial designation. It is fast, yields a ample amount, as least for my purposes, and, unlike the previous reviewer's experience, is plenty hot. The pot is substantial, brushed steel and of a good weight, and the whole unit has a squat, durable feel. A nice addition to any kitchen, in terms of fashion and functionality.
